Profile of Mike Rodgers

Music has been part of Mike Rodgers' daily life from an early age.  He started learning to play the piano at the age of 7, and at the same time, joined the church choir. Although Mike was not to know it at the time, becoming a member of the church choir was to prove invaluable in his later choice of career.

Mike Rodgers attended Leeds Grammar School where his piano tutor was the internationally acclaimed musician Dr Andrew Padmore.  When Mike was 14, he also started learning to play the organ under Dr Padmore's tuition.  During his latter years at school, he learnt the organ and piano in tandem.

Mike Rodgers' varied experiences in learning the piano and organ, together with his long-standing membership of the church choir, stood him in good stead in his chosen career as an organist and accompanist, and subsequently a piano teacher.

Since 2005 Mike Rodgers has been a professional piano teacher both in private practice in Leeds and in schools. He is piano tutor to the boys of Leeds Minster Choir, and also teaches at Corpus Christi Catholic College, Leeds.  In 2008, Mike was appointed piano teacher at the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama in Leeds (now called Music House), which provides expert private tuition on a one-to-one basis to students of all ages.

In 2004, Mike achieved the Diploma in Piano Performing from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

Mike Rodgers is also the accompanist at the Music House, which is the Leeds centre for all the main music examining boards.  Mike is the official piano accompanist for the music examinations held at Music House.

Mike was one of only 471 candidates to be awarded the Diploma in the UK that year, not just for piano but for any instrument.

Mike Rodgers' background as an organist in Leeds

Mike Rodgers started training to play the organ at the age of 14, having already honed his keyboard skills through prowess on the piano, obtaining a Diploma whilst still at school in Leeds.

Mike Rodgers' long association with the church began at the age of seven, when he joined the church choir.  His formative years were spent building up a vast knowledge of the music required for all types of church service, both traditional and modern.

Although he was not to know it at the time, this experience has been invaluable to him in his career as church organist and accompanist.  Not only is Mike familiar with virtually all the repertoire used at church services, but he also understands the requirements of a singer and can apply this knowledge to his accompaniment of both church and secular choirs.

Mike Rodgers has been the organist at St Edmund's Church in Roundhay, Leeds, since 2005. See Music & Choir at St Edmund's for more information.
